Nitl Nakht: Xmas Eve (Der Nister Style)

Rabbi Pinchas Giller will join us at Der Nister to teach and tell stories about the tradition of Nitl Nakht, the European Jewish Xmas Eve anti-holiday.

Xmas night has a number of identities in Judaism, most deriving from the fraught relationship of Judaism and Christianity. Is Jesus merely a heretic, a charlatan or does he transform into a full-fledged demon, rising from the grave to poison the wells on Christmas eve and do other mischief? We will review this role of the functional demonic with regards to Christianity and Judaism, and review some of the ambivalences of Judaism with regards to our neighbor religions.

To be followed by chess, Chinese food and a generally good time.
