Jewish Language Project: Past/Present/Future

Three members of the HUC-JIR Jewish Language Project team will share about their personal connections to Jewish languages and why the work of language preservation matters to them. Sarah Bunin Benor, founding director of the Jewish Language Project and Professor of Contemporary Jewish Studies and Linguistics at HUC-JIR, will give an overview of the JLP and its accomplishments so far. Alan Niku - filmmaker, writer, and scholar of Mizrahi culture - will talk about his work interviewing speakers of endangered Iranian Jewish languages and preparing the videos for preservation. Eden Moyal, linguistics student and JLP curator and documentation manager, will share some of the JLP's educational resources, including the multilingual Omer counter and the Algerian Jewish Sign Language page, and will give a sneak peek into future plans.
